Remembering Waimarie

Waimarie

Just after midnight on Wednesday Morning, island lights flickered, and then went out.

A blue Hyundai coupe, carrying three young people crashed into two telephone poles, approximately 1.4 miles west of the Kalae turnoff on the Maunaloa Highway, leaving one dead and two in critical condition. The accident also caused a power outage on the West End of Moloka'i.

Dead at the scene was backseat passenger Teri Waimarie Maxwell, 17, a New Zealander who had been studying on Moloka'i for the past school session.

Another passenger, Dane S. Dudoit, 20, was taken to Molokai General Hospital in critical condition and was treated and stabilized before being flown to the emergency room at Queen's Medical Center, on O'ahu, said a Moloka'i General Hospital spokesperson.

A third victim, 19-year-old Baron Haoa Okimoto was flown directly from the scene to Maui Memorial Hospital. From there he was treated and also transferred to Queens Medical Center on O'ahu. No word on his condition is available yet.

Moloka'i Police said the cause of the accident was under investigation. Said Sgt. Gene Santiago, "There were no indications of alcohol at all, however speed may have been a factor."
